Association
The Association of Civil Engineering students was established in the academic year 2012-2013. The Association was named as “Federation of Remarkable Civil Engineers (FORCE)” and was inaugurated by Sri. Vinayakumar, Executive Engineer, Water Authority on 21.01.2013. He delivered a talk on “Concrete mix design and ready-mix concrete”. The Association aims at conducting technical programs for the benefit of the students, faculty and other stake holders in the discipline of civil engineering. They include seminars, project presentation, model making, technical games and quizzes, delivering technical lectures to the contractors, masons, and the public, etc. Conducting technical visits to industries and construction sites and supporting academically weaker students in their studies by forming students’ study groups are also part of the duties of the association.
The executive committee of FORCE consists of the following members: president, vice-president, secretary, joint-secretary, treasurer and five executive committee members. The functions of the association are controlled by a faculty advisor. The executive committee is re-elected from among the students of B.Tech civil engineering, every year on 21st January during the anniversary celebrations of the association. Sri. Senjo Sebastian (2011-2015 batch) and Sri. Lalkrishna (2012-2015 batch) are the former presidents and Sri. Earnest Antony Green (2013-2016 batch) is the present president of FORCE.
A Brief Report on the Activities of FORCE
Models of buildings, bridges and other structures were exhibited along with some of the civil engineering equipment in the first program of FORCE on 21.01.2013 after the inauguration and it is followed by a fresher’s day and cultural programs. Cochin metro casting yard and construction sites were visited in two occasions by the 2011-2015 batch and 2013-2016 batch students. The students were guided by the engineers of KMCL (Larson & Tubro constructions) to gather information regarding the construction practice and safety precautions followed by the KMCL. The students could learn very much from the visits, especially the quality standards and safety precautions they follow for construction and pre-stressing procedure and the transportation process, machinery and vehicles.
Dr. Sunilkumar N, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering was honored by the FORCE for securing PhD with gold medal from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in March 2013. Prof. (Dr.) P G Bhaskaran Nair delivered an informative and thought provoking speech in that occasion. The first anniversary of FORCE was inaugurated by Dr. George Mathew, Head, safety and Fire Division, School of Engineering, CUSAT on 21.01.2014. He delivered a very informative talk on “Geopolymer Concrete”. Fresher’s day and cultural programs followed it. The second anniversary was inaugurated on 21.01.2015 by the then Principal of CUCEK and HoD, Civil Engineering followed by three seminars by the students (2011-2015 batch), Adarsh C, Agaja A B and Sagar Jaiswal. A farewell program of 2011-2015 batch B.Tech Civil Engineering students was conducted by the association in a very colourful manner. The third anniversary of the association was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) P G Bhaskaran Nair, PG Dean, Department of Civil Engineering, Sree Narayana Institute of Technology, Adoor on 21st January 2016. He delivered a very excellent lecture touching geotechnical engineering and ground improvement techniques, named as “Developments in Civil Engineering”. Model making competition and some technical games followed it. The students of civil engineering take part in the arts and sports programs every year under the banner of FORCE.
The FORCE is acting as a catalyst binding force among the students and staff of the division of civil engineering. In addition to improving the technical thought process of students it helps in developing leadership and organization skills and discipline to a certain extent among the students. Let the mighty FORCE lead its members to become quality engineers and refined human beings.
